Part of Our Roots: Elko to Shepardsville
Bro R.E. Dawkins as stated elsewhere in this page, loved Bro Sowders, his Pastor very much. He was always faithful to him as an elder over him. Through the years and many heartaches, Bro Dawkins learned that due to back taxes owed, they were going to sell Bro Sowders' campground in Shepherdsville, KY on the courthouse steps. Bro Dawkins barely making it in Kansas City after the splitting of his church in 1955; came before his remaining of the church and said, I cannot let my Pastor be known as a, "tax dodger". So he asked the saints that remained in the KC church, to dig deep to help stop the sale of the campground on the courthouse steps in Kentucky. Bro Dawkins sent three men to Kentucky the morning of the sale and stopped the sale of the campground. Bro Dawkins hired a lawyer to help prove that the campground should not be paying taxes, as it is a church and should not owe taxes. Sis Mills was a faithful saint there that took care of the campgrounds for many years. She asked Bro Dawkins to be a trustee after he helped in saving the campground. He told her no, as that was not what he wanted in some type of control . He told her and many people after, that he just wanted to make sure that there was no bad mark on the the name of his pastor, Bro William Sowders.
After many years of no activity at the campground, Bro Alfred Daves, Godfrey, IL, and many others worked to bring the brethren together for camp meetings again. Bro Orville Wallace in 1973 felt the leading of the Lord to be among the brethren that had been divided. Bro Wallace purchased this cabin on the campgrounds in 1973 and Gospel Tabernacle has continued to support the campground and the brethren of the Body of Christ, still today.
